• We reiterate our call for a General Election to take this country forward!

In recent weeks, since Hon. Mahinda Rajapaksa took over the caretaker government, in the midst of a severe economic crisis due to the inefficiency of the UNP government, there have been several allegations which have surfaced that the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna has offered large sums of money for MPs to cross over to our side.

Some of these allegations have thrown mud at Hon. Rajapaksa and his party saying they have offered exorbitant amounts to MPs only to secure a majority in Parliament and have also promised to divide the country so that the SLPP can continue in government.

These allegations have remained nothing but a myth and it has surfaced from those who have failed to win the trust of the people and have failed to work for the nation.

My father, Hon Mahinda Rajapaksa, as you all know, has been a people’s leader. With his years of experience in politics, he has served the nation well. No one can deny the fact that under his strong leadership, he together with our valiant tri forces, were able to end the three decade long civil war against the LTTE terrorists. Today, Sri Lanka has seen peace and development, is because my father worked for each and every one of you. He has believed in the courage of his people and has taken pride in serving for his country.

In Oct, when President Maithripala Sirisena turned to Hon. Rajapaksa for help save this nation once again, this time from an economic, political and social turmoil, my father agreed. Even within these past three years, while sitting in the opposition benches, Hon. Rajapaksa had not stopped working for the country. People came to him in thousands, to discuss their worries and concerns, and to seek his help. Thousands also came to him just to thank him, to sit with him and just to be encouraged by him. His doors were never closed for the Sri Lankan citizen.

Hon. Rajapaksa never needed an official seat to work for Sri Lanka. As he said in his speech in Parliament last month, “I do not need this seat to work. I have served as a Prime Minister, a President. I do not need an official label like you all to work for Sri Lanka,” he told all the MPs.

Hon. Rajapaksa has always maintained one condition. And that it to function as an honest politician and serve his party, based on the policies of the party. He has never been misled and he himself has never misled another MP. His only condition to welcome a new MP to his party is that they must cross over based on the policies of the party. He has always maintained that a politician can work well for his country, only if he first remains dedicated to his political party.

In recent weeks, there have been groups who have been misled by the failing UNP, who, fearing that their failures and frauds will be exposed, have alleged that Hon. Rajapaksa has offered money to buy MPs. This is just the work of some who fear that their own frauds will soon be exposed.

Hon. Rajapaksa does not need to offer money to show his majority. He will show his majority when the need arises.

Since Oct 26, there have been some MPs who have approached Hon, Rajapaksa and President Sirisena, seeking financial assistance to cross over, but these MPs have only been turned down and sent back. The only advise given to them is, to Join us if they accept our party policies and if they want to work for this nation who has already borne the brunt of fraud and corruption these past three and a half years.

There have also been allegations that my father has promised to divide the country if MPs cross over to our side. I ask these people, spreading these allegations, that is it possible, that a leader who bravely faced the threats of the LTTE and saw his valiant forces end the war, ever be able to see the country divided once again? If Hon. Rajapaksa wanted to divide this island, he would not have bought peace to our shores, which paved way for development, investments, tourism, etc to enter our land.

In recent weeks, we the SLPP, have also heard allegations that the UNP too have offered various amounts of monies for MPs to sit with them. But these rumors have been ignored by Hon. Rajapaksa who has maintained that millions should never be wasted on illegal practices of buying MPs. In-fact Hon. Rajapaksa reiterates his call for a General Election, so that a strong, stable government can be in place, and we can start working for Sri Lanka, to take this country forward. His only hope has always been to see this country prosper.

We reiterate our call for a General Election. #LetMeVote
