• Global Warming. Our future is disappearing – Fight Against Global Warming

In recent days, a video circulating on social media has caught my attention. It is the video of a beautifully designed ice sculpture of a mother holding her little child’s hand.

Under the burning sun, the little boy’s sculpture is melting away till it is finally reduced to a small piece of ice, much to the shock of passerby’s. At the end of the video comes a stark warning – ‘Global Warming. Our future is disappearing’.

The video leaves a deep impact on anyone who watches it. It sends out a clear message that global warming is real and it has begun causing disastrous consequences.

A few months ago, when I visited Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, I was shocked to see the impact global warming had on these beautiful ice mountains. Our ice glaciers are slowly melting away and it is time urgent steps are taken to address this issue so that we can save our future generations. I will upload a video on how this issue has had an impact on Mount Kilimanjaro with a detailed article on a latter date.

Sri Lanka has always been a country which has paid special attention in combating this grave issue. In fact Hon. Mahinda Rajapaksa, during his time in government before 2015, underlined the severity of this issue in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in 2010.

He said, the world, unlike in the past, had become severely vulnerable to natural disasters. Today, eight years later, we cannot agree with him more. Sri Lanka, itself, in recent years has faced devastating floods, landslides, drought etc, which has taken the lives of hundreds and affected the livelihood of thousands.

In addition the world also has seen devastating earthquakes, tsunamis, droughts, floods, etc, which has killed many and left us all distraught.

Today, we need to do more to address and combat this serious issue. Global Warming is having an impact on our planet. We, as governments need to make this our top priority. Hon. Rajapaksa was always committed to taking steps to tackle this issue. He implemented several projects which would help address climate change.

The government, under the SLPP and its alliance members, will follow Hon Rajapaksa’s guidance. We will continue to implement projects to tackle climate change for the benefit of our children and all future generations. We need to act. And we need to act fast.
