• In a world where some social movements are created to cause upheaval, it is relieving to see the #MeForYou movement

Today, I held an extremely important discussion with a group of talented, young, dynamic and energetic group of youngsters who are all part of the #MeForYou social movement which has been established to help one another in today’s society.

In the present day and age, when we all face some sort of obstacles, crisis, instability etc, it is indeed heartening to see that our youngsters are now rising to help our brothers and sisters who are in need.

I, being a young member of parliament myself, have always worked towards strengthening the youth sector in this country. Today I am proud to say that I was invited to be a part off this ambitious #MeForYou movement. While I am humbled to have received this invitation, I am also now proud to be a part of this group and will work to fulfill the goals facing the youngsters in this country.

Today, I held an in depth discussion with all volunteers from the #MeForYou movement at the Gangaramaya Temple, in Colombo. Our meeting revolved around helping our brothers and sisters in the north who have been hit by the floods and as a result have virtually lost everything.

As of today, the Disaster Management Center said that over 86,000 people have been affected in Jaffna, Mullaitivu, Killinochchi, Vavuniya and Mannar, while two deaths have been reported. Several houses have been partially or fully damaged and some houses still remain inundated.

Our citizens in the north need our help to recover from this tragedy. During my visit to the north on Christmas Day, to help the flood affected families, it was disheartening to see how much was lost. A lot of agricultural lands had been destroyed, while many families had lost their homes. Livelihoods had been lost while little school children complained to me that they had lost all their school items.

At a time of crisis, it is indeed comforting to know that social movements such as the #MeForYou movement are doing everything necessary to assist the victims at their time of need. Today, the volunteers discussed several steps that they intend to take to help the flood affected victims in the north and how best they can work to bring normalcy back into the affected areas.

I have always stressed that the youth sector is one of the most important and vital sectors in any country. Today, when certain social movement are created to spread violence and create upheaval in some countries, it is encouraging to see that there are movements such as the #MeForYou which have been created to make people realize their social responsibilities.

I encourage more youngsters to join this movement and assist them spread their message of love and peace. After all, each one of us can contribute in some small way to make the world a better place.
