• Clarification on my interview with Tamil Nadu based Puthiya Thalaimurai Channel.

My interview with Tamil Nadu based Puthiya Thalaimurai Channel, where I explained that Hon. Mahinda Rajapakse was appointed constitutionally under the 19th Amendment and allegations claiming that his appointment was illegal, was false.

I explained that in 2015, when Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe was appointed as Prime Minister, he had only 44 seats in Parliament. At that time, the UPFA had a two thirds majority but following the Presidential polls in 2015, a Leader, whose party had only 44 seats became the Prime Minister and formed a government.

I also explained that even today, the TNA, despite having only 16 seats, is the main opposition party, the JVP having only 6 seats, is the Chief Opposition Whip and we, having 54 seats plus a further 16, were not recognized as the main opposition. So before making any claims of illegality, Hon. Wickremesinghe should note that it was he who had maintained an illegal system in the House, after forming a government.

Also where was Hon. Wickremesinghe’s calls for democracy when he delayed the local council elections and the provincial council elections? He was never ready to face an election as he knew he had lost the trust of this nation.
I further clearly explained that the only reason Parliament had been prorogued was because the new government headed by President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse did not want to present a Budget drafted by the previous government. The prorogation of Parliament begun from Nov 5 as we needed time to work on our Budget, our policies, our programs as we are a new government. We need to deliver the best to the people now.
I also explained that the Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Karu Jayasuriya, was also showing his partiality at the moment and he had been doing so for the past 3 years. Hon. Karu Jayasuriya was a pro UNP member and was only working for his party’s interest.

I further spoke on the policies of the TNA and explained that their policies were not in the interest of the Tamil people and the TNA had become a mere puppet of Hon. Wickremesinghe.
