• I together with Hon. Prime Minister, Mahinda Rajapakse joined the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna to build a better Sri Lanka

On Sunday morning, I together with Hon. Prime Minister, Mahinda Rajapakse, resigned from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and joined the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna to contest the upcoming General Elections on January 5.

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party is one of the country’s largest political parties which was founded by the late S.W.R.D Bandaranaike and my grand father, the late D.A. Rajapakse who was one of SLFP’s founding members. The party was formed on the basis of the ‘Pancha Maha Balavegaya’ and it represents the masses of the country. Some people, for their own political gain, lately have been portraying the SLFP as a racist party. But anyone who knows its members and its history will know this is mere lies.

The SLFP has always had a very strong voter base since the party was formed in 1951. It even had a very strong voter base in Jaffna, during the period of Sirimavo Bandaranaike and Hector Kobbekaduwa, as the policies of the party were widely popular. However, after Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe was selected as the Prime Minister in 2015, the SLFP joined with the UNF Alliance to form a national government. This made some of us eventually move away from the party, as we did not agree to working under the policies of the UNP, as their policies do not represent the masses of this nation.

It was then that we formed the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna. The policies of the SLPP is the same as that of SLFP, however with a more broader and modern approach in order to cater to the youth of the country. The SLPP also adopted to have a broader vision and a broader understanding of the national issues in order to understand how best we can provide for our citizens, from all age groups.

Especially for the educated and younger generation, the SLPP has a very broad vision under Hon. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse’s ‘Mahinda Chintanaya’.
The party’s aim is to transform Sri Lanka into a developed nation not only in this region, but in the world as it is high time Sri Lanka attracts more investments, which will create wider jobs and uplift the living standards of all our people.
With Sri Lanka’s strategic location in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka has the potential to be an emerging hub and we will now work towards achieving this for the benefit of all our citizens.

The SLPP, under its party policies, also has a very wide program to develop Sri Lanka’s health, education, transport and economic sectors.
We will now work for the country and prove the results in a very short time under the leadership of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse.

At the upcoming General Elections, in order to now work better for You – The People – the SLPP will be forming a broad coalition with the SLFP and all its other stake holders under the leadership of President Sirisena and Prime Minister Rajapakse. For three years, this country has not taken even the slightest leap forward. While there was many a talk, no new projects were initiated, no new investments kicked off and the citizens were only burdened with a high cost of living and high taxes.

The SLPP, under the leadership of Hon. Mahinda Rajapakse is firm in its vision to work for the People and the Country. Sri Lanka deserves much more, and the SLPP is committed to achieving that.
